Supporting your child's nursery journey

At The Heatons, we understand that starting nursery is a big step for both children and parents, and we are committed to making this transition as positive and reassuring as possible. We take time to get to know each family, offering gentle settling‑in sessions and consistent support to help children feel safe, confident and secure. By working closely with parents and building strong, trusting relationships from the very beginning, we ensure every child is supported to settle happily into nursery life at their own pace.

Starting at The Heatons

We understand that every new stage in your child’s journey is an important moment for families. Whether joining us for the first time or moving on to school, we ensure each transition is gentle, positive and carefully supported.

Settling In Sessions

Gentle, short visits to help your child (and you) become familiar with our staff and daily routines.

Key Person Support

A dedicated practitioner who builds a strong bond with your child, acting as a secure base for exploration.

Parent Communication

Daily diaries, Tapestry observations, termly progress phone calls and Learning and Development postcards ensure you are always connected to your child's nursery experience.

Moving Through Our Rooms

As your child develops, they will transition between our age-specific rooms. This process is managed with care over several weeks to ensure they feel confident and excited.

Preparation

Key persons discuss the move, share important information about your child, and start visiting the new room with the child for short play periods.

Introduction

The child begins spending specific activity times (like snack or story time) in their future room. Children will usually move rooms in a small group with other children from their room.

Full Transition

A official 'move day' where the child permanently joins their new group with full support.

Preparing for School

Preparing children for the transition from nursery to school is an important part of our curriculum. We work closely with children, families, and local schools to help build confidence, independence, and key skills that support a successful start to school life. Through activities that encourage self-care, communication, early literacy and numeracy, listening skills, and following routines, children become familiar with the expectations of a school environment. We also provide opportunities to discuss change positively, helping children feel excited, secure, and ready to embrace their next learning journey.

Ready Socially

We encourage teamwork, listening skills and positive relationships.

Ready Emotionally

We support independence, confidence and emotional resilience.

Ready Academically

We build early literacy, numeracy and communication skills.
